Kalakarni Jatak | Moral story for kids

Once upon a time Brahmadatta was the king of Baranasi. Then the Bodhisattva was famous treasurer. The treasurer has a friend kalakarni by name. Kalakarni was his play-mate in his childhood. Next time he fell into great distress. then he wanted help from the Bodhisattva.

Bodhisattva engaged him to look after all his property. From that time Kalakarni had been working as his employee.

After Kalakarni had come to the rich man’s house, it was a common thing to hear in the house, ‘Stand up Kalakarni, sit down Kalakarni, go Kalakarni.’ Then the treasurer’s friend were displeased and called on him and said, ‘Lord Treasurer, it is heard from your house to address Kalakarni. Stand up, sit down, eat, etc. To look at its not good. Please give up his company.’ Bodhisattva replied, ‘A name only serves to denote a man, and the wise do not measure a man by his name. No body should suspect misfortune after hearing any name. I will never throw over, for his mere name’s sake, the friend with whom I had early friendship.’

The rich Bodhisattva had a Bhoga village, that means the king gave him this village to enjoy. One day he went to that village after giving the charge of the house to Kalakarni. Then the thieves thought, ‘Now the treasurer is not at home. We shall steal everything from his house in this convenient time.’
Thinking it, they surrounded the treasurer’s house with weapons at that night. But Kalakarni doubted before, ‘Tonight the thieves may come.’ So he was sitting awaking for them. When he knew that the robbers were assembled around the house, then he scouted out to inform the neighbors, ‘Ring the conch, beat the drum. ‘He had the whole house full of noise.

The robbers thought to see this, ‘It is not true that the treasurer is not at home. There are many awakened people at the home. Perhaps the treasurer has returned. So it is impossible to plunder the house.’

Then they flinging away their stones, sticks, and other weapons went away. Next morning the neighbours understood to see all the discarded weapons lying round the house. That the previous day thieves came.

They were afraid. Then they discussed, ‘If there had not been an intelligent Kalakarni as the robbers is steal the wealth of the treasurer. The treasurer was so would lucky that he got so faithful man like  him.

At that moment the merchant came back from his village and heard the story in details. He said his friends. ‘If I would chase such a faithful friend, thieves would steal away all that I had.
Then he preached a verse to them. He said, ‘He is friend, with whom seven steps one goes ahead, he is called a comrade, with whom one lives twelve days, he is like a kinsman, with whom one lives a fortnight or a month, is a real friend with whom relation is best and one lives together. Can I forsake my childhood friend for the sake of own happiness?’
Bodhisattva advised all saying this.

Moral : A friend in need is a friend indeed.
