Once upon a time, a speedy hare was very proud of how fast he could run. He would tease the slow tortoise all the time.
One day, the tortoise got tired of being mocked and said, “Let’s have a race.”
The hare laughed, “You? A race with me? That’s funny! But sure, let’s do it.”
So they set up a race path. The race began, and the hare quickly raced far ahead. Seeing the tortoise far behind, the hare thought, “He’ll take forever to catch up. I’ll just nap under this tree.”
While the hare was sleeping, the tortoise kept moving slowly and steadily. Eventually, he passed the sleeping hare and crossed the finish line.
When the hare woke up, he ran as fast as he could—but it was too late. The tortoise had already won the race!
